Now is the time to soak up some of nature’s Vitamin D! Here you can learn about the many overlooked health benefits of Vitamin D and ways to get outside and enjoy these sunny days, whether with loved ones or on your own.
As we are coming into the warmer months, I want to talk about how important it is to get out and take in some of earth’s natural vitamin D, the sun. Getting sunshine everyday can help reduce depression, relieve pain, promote relaxation, and even assist in healing. In this article I will be sharing the benefits of sunshine and ways to embrace the sun.
Sunshine has several beneficial effects on our bodies:
Mood Enhancement
Sun exposure helps our bodies boost their natural production of serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that helps us boost our mood and promote more positive feelings and happiness. This is something our body uses to help alleviate those feelings of depression and anxiety, particularly when you go though Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
Vitamin D Production and Immune System Support
Exposure to sunlight triggers the synthesis of Vitamin D in the skin. This helps with bone health, immune function, and overall well-being. Vitamin D plays a vital role in our immune function by boosting our immune system. Having a higher level of vitamin d level can help your body stay healthy and keep infections and diseases away.
Skin Health
Moderate sunlight exposure can even help improve skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis and even acne, due to its anti-inflammatory effects. It is important to regulate sunlight exposure to avoid risks associated with overexposure to the sun. Use sunscreen and seek shade during peak sunlight hours to help reduce these risks while still gaining the benefits of the sun.
Bone and Muscle Health
Vitamin D is crucial for building calcium in our bones. Without sufficient Vitamin D, bones can become thin and brittle. Vitamin D is also important for muscle function, deficiency can lead to muscle weakness and pain.
Blood Pressure Regulation
Some studies suggest that sunlight exposure can help lower blood pressure by causing the release of nitric oxide from the skin into the bloodstream, which dilates blood vessels.
Diabetes Management
There is evidence that Vitamin D helps regulate insulin and manage diabetes. Vitamin D may play a role in insulin sensitivity and secretion.
As the days get warmer and the sun stays out for us to enjoy, let’s get out and soak up some much-needed Vitamin D. Whether you love adventure or are someone who prefers a more relaxed setting, there are so many ways to enjoy the great outdoors. Let me share with you some of my favorite ways to make the most of the sunny days coming our way.
Taking a Hike
Exploring our natural trails is a wonderful way to enjoy the sunshine. Enjoying a leisure walk at a local park or tackling a challenging trail is great for both physical exercise and mental refreshment.
Picnic in the Park
Whether by yourself or with family or friends, picking a park and packing a picnic basket is a delightful way to enjoy the sun. Choose a spot, lay out a blanket and enjoy a meal or snack surrounded by nature. You can always bring along a game or ball or even a book to read.
Enjoying Time Outside with your Pup
If you have a dog, you know just how much you anticipate the warmer weather. Not only for the pup to get out, get some exercise and enjoy the outdoors but also for us to do the same. Whether it’s taking a long walk around your neighborhood, a walk to the park, playing fetch in the yard or relaxing in the grass with your favorite four-legged friend, getting out with your dog is beneficial for the both of you.
Gardening
Gardening is a rewarding way to spend time in the sun and connect with nature. Whether you have a large backyard or a small balcony, gardening is a great way to take in the sun, touch nature and show your personality. Choosing what flower, herd, vegetables, or fruit you would like to plant is a fun part of this activity as well. Gardening can be satisfying and rewarding with the benefit of fresh produce or beautiful blooms.
Water Adventures
If you are near a lake, river, or ocean, this is the perfect time to try kayaking, canoeing, or sailing to get out in the sun on the water. These activities are fun but also provide a great workout. For something a little more relaxing, going out on a paddle board can get you out in the water. My personal favorite water activity is going out on a kayak. Whether at a local forest pressure or going down a river, I enjoy watching all the nature around us as you make your way. *You can look up what places offer rentals if you do not have your own.
Camping
Camping is a classic way to immerse yourself in nature. You can tent camp (my personal favorite) trailer camp, or even cabin camp (glamping). Enjoying a few nights under the stars can be a memorable experience. All the things to love about camping include being out in nature and taking in all that natural sun, hiking, fishing, campfire, and campfire cooking. Enjoying the little things away from our normal home routine.
Attending Outdoor Events
Summer is the season for outdoor events including concerts, festivals, farmers markets and so much more. Gather your friends and family for a fun day out exploring your local events. You can find out what is going on in your area by checking out local listings or searching your town’s events.
As the warmer days approach us, step outside and embrace all that nature has to offer. The sun is reaching for us to get out and take in all she has to offer. From gardening in your backyard to a weekend away camping, there is something for each of us to enjoy. So put on some sunscreen, grab your favorite sunglasses, and make the most of these beautiful sunny days. Your mind and body will thank you!
*Enjoy your alone time but this is also the time to reach out to your friends and family and get them out with you. We all could use a little sunshine and being around loved ones helps increase your mood as well.
